About La Mexicana Restaurant & Grocery
Our kitchen features the finest of traditional Mexican cuisine prepared with family recipes from the Oaxaca and Jalisco regions of México. Everardo Sosa-Mendoza loves to cook, and he loves to eat. The ambitious native of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico moved to America as a teen – and he’s now raising a family with his wife, Maria, in the historic City of Schenectady. With few nearby options to satisfy their yearning for a taste of home, the pair opened up La Mexicana Restaurant alongside the La Mexicana Grocery that carries ingredients from South and Central America. Maria’s family recipes offer the savory flavors of Jalisco in Central Mexico – Everardo’s tastes feature the influence of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Enjoy!

The grocery side has many items. The restaurant portion has a very limited menu. Prices are kind of high. Food is good, but nothing special. It's convenient for us in a pinch, but there's other Mexican restaurants we prefer.

I really like the food here, and I usually order burritos or tacos. However, I have noticed something frustrating every time I order multiple burritos: the amount of salsa I receive never seems to match the number of burritos. For example, if I order one burrito, I get one green salsa and one red salsa. Naturally, if I order three burritos, I would expect to receive six salsas (two per burrito). Instead, when I order multiple burritos, I somehow end up with only two, three, or four salsas. Yesterday was no exception. I ordered three burritos and, before leaving, checked the bag and found only four salsas. If I had placed three separate orders, I would have received six. When I politely asked for the other two salsas, the girl with braces was very condescending and acted as though I was asking for something that wasn't part of my order. She gave me an explanation that made little sense regarding why I had only received four. I even asked whether I should place three separate orders next time if that's what it takes to receive the same amount of salsa that comes with each burrito. She cut me off and asked, "Did you end up getting what you wanted?" When I answered yes, she sarcastic

Food here has been consistently phenomenal for the last decade at least. The lingua tacos are must try, they are unctuous and have a deep beef flavor, like they've been stewed in beef marrow. It is unlike any other taco I've ever had, so delicious for such a good price! You can grab a fresh bag of chicharróns in the grocery to dip in your salsa if you are keto or want something besides chips (try this out, you will thank me). The carnitas, Al Pastor, and chorizo tacos are all great as well, but that lingua is the best taco I ever had. The tamales are also great here. Another plus- they make the margarita mix in house!!! So it's not just sour mix, it's actually citrusy and nuanced. Very good. Another plus that is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get at a Mexican restaurant- they actually don't add cilantro when you ask for "No Cilantro"!!! If you have a cilantro soap flavor problem, you can eat Mexican food here and it doesn't taste like soap!!! The grocery store is remarkably affordable. Pilloncillo sugar, spices, and other Mexican groceries were all very well priced. The chorizo is awesome from the grocery store if you want some to take with you. Everyone should go here. I want to try the B

Wonderful hole in the wall. Fajitas, pozole and tacos were delicious & gave a good quantity for the prices. My only critique is that their tortillas are quite mid and they don’t give enough of them for the fajitas.

Authentic Mexican food with other south American influences. The atmosphere is basic, but food is delicious with good value for the portion sizes. The guacamole is very tasty. The menu is not huge, but there are some original dishes and variations. Definitely try the tacos, carnitas or Al pastor. The flaun is a delicious dessert to end the meal. Parking is tight, but there is more around back. There were many Spanish and Mexican people eating there when we were so it speaks to the authentic flavors they offer. Don't forget to drop by the store for some different foods you can't find elsewhere.
